Legends of dragon-like creatures exist in the histories of nearly every culture in the world. What are real here? Grootslang According to popular reports, Peter Grayson, a British explorer, went missing in 1917 searching for the “Wonder Hole”, a deep cave in the Richtersveld region of South Africa that was supposedly filled with diamonds. Local tribes feared the cave, as the gems were said to be guarded by the Grootslang, a 50-foot long snake-like creature sometimes described as having a head similar to that of the elephant, which was also its primary prey. Several of Grayson’s team were picked off by lions before he is rumored to have disappeared at the hands of the monster. Cryptozoologists believe that if the creature does exist, it may be related to the famed African cryptid, Mokele-mbembe. Phaya Naga Along the Mekong River in Laos and Thailand the Naga fireballs are a mysterious phenomenon in which bright reddish balls of light rise from the water and shoot up to 500 feet into the sky. Locals attribute the spectacle to the Phaya Naga, or Mekong Dragon, a large serpent that is alleged to lurk in the river. Sightings have been liken to a mysterious unidentified oarfish, yet all known species live in deep water marine environments. Plasma orbs and gas bubbles have been suggested as sources of the fireballs, but the true cause remains unknown. Kongamato In 1923, after 11 years of research in Northern Rhodesia, Frank Melland published an astonishing account of the Kongamato, a dangerous red or black creature with a 7-foot wingspan that attacked the local Kaonde tribe along certain rivers. Tribe members identified the creature as a pterosaur when shown illustrations from Melland’s book collection. In 1957, hospital records from nearby Fort Rosebery describe a man with a severe chest wound who drew a similar creature. There are also possible links to the Namibian Flying Snake described by author-reporter Lawrence Green in 1959 who in his book “These wonders to behold described a much larger “dragon” that devoured sheep and left the scent of fire. Did Dragons Really Exist?Did dragons really exist in the form of Alps Dragon? The Tatzelwurm is a 6-foot long dark scaly creature with sharp front claws, a feline-like head, knifelike teeth, and a body that emits poisonous fumes. Following the first reported sighting in 1779, farmers in remote villages complained of a monster attacking livestock. Illustrations of the Tatzelwurm subsequently appeared in an 1836 Bavarian hunting guide and an 1841 Swiss almanac. Some theorize the creature may be an unidentified relative of the poisonous Gila Monster or the Giant salamander. Another possible dragon existence is in the Tver region of Russia, a bizarre 141-foot deep body of fresh water known as Lake Brosno that is inhabited by saltwater fish and also believed to be home to a large bioluminescent creature, the Brosno dragon. Reports of the dragon date back to a 13-century attack on a Tartar-Mongol army camped on the lake’s shores, and more recent alleged encounters include the swallowing of a German plane in WWII and the appearance of globster carcasses. If not hiding an unknown species, some believe that the lake may be an undiscovered volcano that caused the deaths. |
